Altruism
The passage and the lecture both addresses the question if altruism which is a unselfish act benefit the individual or not. While the author of the passage feels these individuals do not gain anything, the lecture feels otherwise. Both the lecture and author defend their points by taking examples of altruistic mammals like meerkat and humans which is elaborated in the below essay.
To begin with, the author describes how in a group of meerkats, an individual sentinel acts as a standing guard and checks if any predator is coming while the other meerkats hunt and search for food. The author emphasized on the fact that by doing this , the meerkat gets nothing and it goes back without food. But the lecture contradicts by saying that the sentinel meerkat first eats and makes itself comfortable, only then it acts as a standing guard to safeguard others.
Secondly the author claims that when a meerkat sees any predator coming it gives an alarm. While all the other meerkats get together and have high chances to chase the predator the sentinel meerkat is left back placing its life in danger. The lecture refutes this by saying that since the sentinel meerkat stays near the burrows, it escapes inside it immediately after giving the alarm. Also since the other meerkats gets scattered or come together the predator has higher chance of noticing them and hence their lives are at stake.
Finally, the author posits by saying there are altruistic human beings as well who donate their body organs without expecting back anything in return, The lecture claims that by doing these things though the individual does not receive any materialistic returns he gets compliments and appreciation by donor and everyone in the society. According to the lecture this sense of self worth is better than monetary benefi
