Anting in birds and some possible benefits of it.

The article discusses three theories as the reason of anting in birds which means they pick up ants and rub them on to their feathers to spray formic acid on their feather. In the lecture, the professor makes a series of points that cast doubts on all the arguments presented in the article. He states that all the theories are unclear and non convincing.
First of all, he states that the only reason for the first theory is timing. In fact, relief of skin irritation during feather change in summer and this act could be completeltly coincidence. Ant are more active and visible to the birds in the summer and more anting in summer could be for this reason not just for the releif of irritation in skin of birds. Hence, this contradict with the theory in article.
Also, the professor refutes the theory of protection against parasites. He believes that if it was the case, birds ingaged in anting have to be less parasitic. However, the observations do not seem to approve fewer parasitic birds engaging in anting. Therefore, this contradicts with the idea of theory.
Lastly, lecturer claims the third theory of food preparation for birds seems thoughtful that birds rub stuff on their feather to make it ready for eat. But,they do not eat something that is stinctive and formic acid is stinctive. For instance, they rub soap and cigarret on their feather but they do not eat them. Therefore, this theory is not convincing as well.
