The reading and the lecture are both about establishing a settlement on asteroids. While the author of the reading argues that the asteroids are the best colonization options, even they are better than Moon and Mars, the professor disputes this claim. He states that establishing a permanent settlement on the asteroids is not practical, and each reason provided by the text has downsides. The lecturer casts doubt on the main point made in writing by providing three controversial reasons.
In the reading, the writer begins by saying that landing and taking off are much easier and safer on the asteroids due to their low gravitational force. However, the professor states that it is true that both landing and taking off are relatively easy on the asteroids, but living under the situation of low gravity increases the risk of losing muscle mass and decline in bone density, which are very dangerous to the human body. Even astronauts who live for a couple of months in spaceships lose a considerable amount of muscles and face serious health problems.
Furthermore, according to the reading passage, the asteroid has plenty of valuable metals, such as gold and platinum. The sponsors of the trips to the asteroids can make a big profit by mining these metals. On the other hand, the professor points out that supporting colonization and transporting these metals from the asteroids to Earth are so expensive and reduce the businesses' profits to a great extent. Also, if those amounts of metals enter the market, their price will not remain the same and will decline.
Finally, the writer believes that the asteroids are more reachable than Moon and Mars because some of them are very close to Earth. Not surprisingly, the professor refutes this claim by contending that the orbit of the asteroids are unusual. Although they may get close to Earth in some cases, they will go away from the Earth after; even they may travel to some distances further than the distance between Earth and Mars. Therefore, getting back from the asteroids to Earth is quite challenging.
To sum up, both the writer and the lecturer hold conflicting views on the eligibility of the astroids as the best colonization option.
