Bears, TOEFL INTEGRATED
The reading passage and the lecture are both about bears and their characteristics. While the author of the passage argues about how bears are aggressive and attack humans, the lecturer on the other hand is against the author’s position. The lecturer holds different views compared to the author.
According to the reading passage, the writer mentions how when bears lose their fear of people, they tend to become more aggressive and attack humans. The lecturer opposes this claim by saying that bears that are fed by people are less likely to attack humans. He presents two examples to support his view. First, he says that in a town in Minnesota, the wild black bears are handfed for quite some time and no one was attacked since the bears lost their fear of humans. He also goes on to say that a doctor surveyed a seven square mile region consisting of 7000 humans with 21 bears, which was an unusually high bear density ratio when compared to national parks and forests, and still there were no incidents despite the human's hand-feeding bears.
Secondly, the author says that bears are naturally aggressive and when they stand on their hind legs, huff, growl, and slap the ground, these are sure indicators that the bear will attack. The lecturer on the other hand says that this claim is incorrect as when a bear tends to stand on his/her hind legs, it could just mean that the bear needs a better view by being elevated in height. When they huff and growl, they tend to show dominance to scare away humans and not attack them.
Finally, the author mentions three techniques to avoid getting killed by a bear. These include running as fast as you can when a bear charges at you, climbing up a tree when you find one and the best defense according to the author is to shoot the bear with a gun. The lecturer was not impressed by these techniques and goes on to say that these are misconceptions. When we encounter a bear in the wild, he says, we should not run but in fact, look into its eyes and talk to the bear by raising our hands above our head to show that we look bigger than the bear. If the bear charges at you, we should fall to the floor in a fetal position and cover our neck with our hands. Climbing a tree is not a very good solution as grizzly bears have large claws by which they can follow a person up a tree. Lastly, instead of shooting a bear and killing it, we can use a non-lethal bear spray which is extremely effective and non-toxic as well.
