Cane toads' spreading may be prevented by several measures
This material addresses the question of the spread of the cane toad species in Australia. The reading passage suggests that there are effective and relatively safe measures to prevent them from /the/ further spread/ing/. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes this information by stating that those means are either unsuccessful or dangerous for the environment.
To begin with, the reading passage highlights that national fence may be build to secure the parts of Australia which have not yet been colonized by these animals, especially since there is already some relevant experience. Meanwhile, the professor casts doubt on this and argues rivers and streams might be used by cane toads to enter the territory behind the fence.
Additionally, the article posits that the animals under consideration may be killed by volunteers - Australian citizens. However, the professor advocates a different approach and provides the following details. Namely, she mentions that untrained people may not be able to differ cane toads from native frogs and harm the population of the latter.
Finally, the author invites attention to the fact that a special virus will be designed to eliminate the toads and which will not harm other species. This goes counter to the information in the listening passage, according to which, the use of the virus may lead to ecological disasters since it may also kill cane toads in their native habitats in Central and South America where they are an essential part of ecosystem. According to the lecturer, the virus may be brought to the other continent by the toads infected in Australia and transported by collectors for example.
