The Chaco Structure and its purpose
The author and the lecturer talk about the purpose of "great houses" in New Mexico. The reading passage states that there is no proper explanation for the use of such buildings, and comes up with three assumptions based upon pieces of evidence found at a few particular locations. The lecturer, however, denies the argument by providing three reasons.
First, according to the reading passage, due to the big shape of the Chaco structure, it can possible that buildings must have been used for the residence of hundred families. Moreover, it also resembles apartment buildings in Taos, New Mexico, where many people live. The lecturer opposes the statement. He says that the given assumption is unreasonable because there are very few fireplaces inside the house to cook food for such a large number of families. According to the speaker, as per present design, it only possible for 10 families to prepare their meals.
Secondly, the Chaos building can be used for storing food. According to the writer, the Chaco people must have used the house for storing maize grains in order to maintain longer food supplies. Nevertheless, the speaker refutes the idea. He says that there is no evidence of maize found at the location. Therefore, it can not be said that the Chaco structure was used to store grains, otherwise, crop should have spilled on the floor or any other clue must be there to support the presence maize containers.
Lastly, the author mentions that buildings were used for ceremonies due to evidence of pots found at the location. He confirms the assumption by providing an example of Pueblo Alto, as one of the house. The professor, however, refutes this assumption. Apart from pot, other material were also present at the site such as construction material and tool, which cast doubt on the statement made by the author. Further, based on the evidence found, it can be possible that the Chaco structure was used as construction site and worker had used the pot for cooking their meal.
