Chevalier's Memoir
Both the reading passage and lectures discusses about the memoir of Chevalier. Whilst the author suggests that the claims made in the memoir was bogus mentioning three different reasons, the challenges the proposition made by the author. In her opinion, the arguments in the memoir was extensively accurate, though not perfect, for several reasons which will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
The author, in the reading, begins by mentioning that although Chevalier affirmed his wealth was often used for gambling and parties, the evidences clearly showed Chevalier burrowed huge sum of money from the prevailing rich ones in Switzerland; however, the speaker refutes the position made by author stating that Chevalier was rich and to attain the sum of money, for parties and gambling, he had to sell the property which would take two to three days. So, when he ran out of money, during that waiting period, he might have taken the sum of money as stated. As you can see, it completely falsifies the authors claim.
The writer further asserts that there was a confusion between accuracy of the conversation between the Chevalier and Voltaire: exact conversations could not be remembered and replicated in the written form in memoir. The lecturer questions the particular argument maintaining that it was acknowledged that Chevalier used to keep notes of the conversation between him and Voltaire as per his remembering capacity during the nights. Further, she adds that there was enough evidence about Chevalier using notes and journals during the preparation of his memoir.
The reading article posits, finally, that statements mentioned about the Chevalier's escape from the prison was doubtful; it was more probable that he ran out of prison by bribing the jailers rather than using ceiling for the escape which would have made it interesting as compared to former one. As opposed to articles opinion, the lecturer argues that there were other numerous powerful prisoners in the jail, but they were unable to escape by bribing. On top of that, she says the evidence marked that the repair of the ceiling of the jail happened after Chevalier escaped from it. Had Chevalier not damaged ceiling for escaping, it would not have been necessary to repair it.
To summarize, the writer and speaker both holds opposite views on the authenticity of Chevalier memoir which will be difficult for them on finding the common ground.
