Dams
The article discusses fascinating topic pertaining to dams and provides three important reasons in support of its benefit. The professor opposes every reason mentioned in the reading passage and puts forward the following points.
First, the reading states that dams create positive impact on environment as it helps in formation of artificial lakes and also provide water for irrigation. The professor refutes this by stating that fishes suffer, as they lose their migration path, as water flow is diverted for construction of dams and also their reproduction is affected as they need fast stream flow of water and after dam is formed water flows slowly. Clearly disparity is seen between reading statements and the lecture discussion. Hence, it is clear that dam creates negative impact on fish.
Second, the reading avers that the electricity of equal amount is produced in comparison to coal base power plant without any harmful gas production. The professor provides opposite stand with the statement that dams often flood the surrounding area which damages the naturally occurring plants there, which gets rotten and produces harmful methane gas and also by destroying plants the capacity of absorbing carbon dioxide from atmosphere reduces which produces further harm. So, in short, we can say that artificial dam damages plants.
Third, the reading posits that construction of dam provides two sources of revenue, one - agricultural production via irrigation, second - electricity production, and this is more than the operational cost of dam. The professor provides information about property damage of the people residing near to dam as there is occasional flood situation nearby. We can argue that indeed the claim made in the reading is unsubstantiated and the professor proves with the opposite explanation.
In summary, both the reading and classroom discussion provide interesting information with regards to dam, a significant amount of evidence supports that dam has more harmful effect in comparison to benefits. Therefore, the reading fails to justify the claim towards dam construction.
