Dog breeding Delta integrated writing #3
La Princesa

Dogs, best known as humans’ best friends, have been mated on purpose by breeders, in order to develop breeds with special and specific traits. By doing this, humans can create a perfect dog breed with the characteristics that they desire. Despite the belief that this is positive for dogs, it might not always be true.
Dog breeders claim that by mating dogs intentionally they are enhancing a dog breed, for some people, this is proof of how much they love and care about these animals. The truth might be a little different. The dog industry has actually created a huge problem for canines. Most of these breeders do not have the knowledge to do this process correctly and just mate dogs wanting to make a profit. They end up exploiting the animals in their backyards and then selling them to anyone, without making sure that the dog will find a nice home.
The obsession for keeping the purity of a breed can also be seen as something negative. Breeders that focus just on the purity of an animal, tend to overuse the same male dog with “great” genes and forget that if this dog carries also a harmful trait, this will be passed to the puppies too. That is why so many pure breeds suffer from genetic disorders. Also, this adds up to the problem of dogs overpopulation.
Another misbelief is that popular culture encourages responsible ownership. When a dog appears in a TV show the breed can become really popular. People go crazy and want to adopt them, so breeders try to reproduce them even more. The problem appears when the owners realize that the breed is not as they watch it on TV, and the poor animals end abandoned in a shelter.
The culture of dog breeders can be seen from some points as something good for these animals, but if you think deeply about it, you can notice how unethical it really is.
