As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand three or four stories high. Archaeologists have been trying to determine how the buildings were used. While there is still no universally agreed upon explanation, there are three competing theories.
Both the reading and the lecture mention about the use of Chaco "great houses" with some competing theories. However, the professor doesn't agree with and points out the unconvincing evidences of those three theories.
As consider in the first theory, Chaco "great houses" were built for hundred of people which appear similar to the large well-known "apartment building" at Southwest New Mexico. This run against the lecture's claim that the quantity of fireplaces in house are not suitable for hundreds of people. With a few fireplaces, the professor thinks that the maximum families living together in great house is only 10 families.
Another theory in the reading contends that the Chaco structures were used to store grain maize as a long-lasting supply of food. While the lecture showed that food containers were not found in the houses so it may not the convincing expaination for the use of great houses.
The last theory relying on the large amount of old material and broken pots proproses that Chaco houses were used as cermonial centers. However, the professor think that those old material were used for contruction instead of ceremony. Moreover, the broken pots found after excavations maybe only the daily trash.
In conclusion, the reading and lecture point out some possible explaination for the use of great houses but those theories have not been convincing universally yet.
