The reading and the lecture are both about the Moai Easter Island. The author of the reading believes that the construction of Moai statues led to the collapse of civilization located there. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks that the society on the island did not suffer as a result of the construction of Moai.
First of all, the author claims that people of the island cut down vast amounts of valuable trees in order to build the statues. He notes that the Moai were moved across the island using wooden tracks and log riders. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says recent research notes that people of the island did not cut down trees to move the Moais. Furthermore, she points out that instead of wooden tracks and log riders they transported the statues by tilting side to side using ropes.
Secondly, the author states deforestation resulted in soil erosions. He argues without trees there were no migratory birds to visit and the people had no food to feed themselves. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer. She suggests that recent studies show easter island’s palm seeds were destroyed by rats. She elaborated by mentioning first settlers of the easter island came with rats as diet, and that they were the main cause of deforestation on the island.
Finally, the author mentions that the problems described above eventually led to a major population collapse. He is of the opinion that easter island fell from high twenty thousand to a low two thousand people when European explorers first came in the eighteenth century. The lecturer, on the other hand, feels that the high twenty thousand people was just a guess. She puts forth the idea that easter island’s highest population was two thousand, and there was not enough time to be in a population of twenty thousand because the first settlers arrived in 1200 A.D.
