Eco-certification in the US
The reading passage explores why some American wood companies are unwilling to pursue ecocertifications to benefit their products and attract more consumers, and several reasons are given in support of this argument. Although these points seem reasonable, the lecturer casts doubt on them for the following reasons.
To begin with, even though the reading passage suggests that American consumers pay less attention to ecocertification labels since there have been many advertisements, the lecturer argues that it is a misconception. This is because some consumers can distinguish between the advertising claims of the companies and independent agencies, which means that those consumers are fond of the certification given by trustworthy organizations.
Second, the author suggests that the price of certified products will be higher than uncertified products since companies need to pay for the examinations. In addition, American consumers are more concerned regarding price and, thus, aren’t likely to choose certified products. Conversely, the lecturer indicates that, in fact, if the price difference between two products is less than five percent, the consumers probably won’t make their decision only based on price. Furthermore, some consumers gradually value the importance of preserving the environment. As a result, the lecturer alleges that consumers will probably be willing to pay for the certified products.
Last but not least, the lecturer acutely identifies the weakness in the passage that American companies often ignore this certification because they only attend to the domestic market. The lecturer points out that some foreign companies might soon flock to American markets, causing competition. In addition, as above mentioned, more American consumers start seeking ecocertified products. Accordingly, some local companies in the United States might lose their consumers who are aware of eco-friendly products.
