The lecture completely refutes the theories presented in the reading. She questions each of three theories that supports the mass-extinction at the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago.
First of all, although it is true that the fallen of the sea level was occured near the end of Triassic period, the plant and the fish can adapt to its change. Moreover, the change was not happened as sudden as the reading said, it gone gradually.
Second, the reading asserts that there were many volcano activity back in that period which release huge amount of SO2 gas. These gas eventually will close the earth atmosphere so there will be no sunlight and earth temperature will decrease drastically. Such condition will make many species devastated. However, the lecture refutes this theory by saying that the SO2 gas will not maintained in the atmosphere for such long period. The gas will be clear out from the sky because it will mix with the water vapour and drop into rain.
Third, the professor disputes the theory that discusses the debris from impacted asteroids to earth's surface cause mass extinction. She cites some study which mentions the asteroid is dated 12 million years before the mass extenction prediction. So there will be no connection between that two events.
