Essay TPO 1 - Working 4 days a week - In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiri has been updated.

Both the reading and the lecture discuss the effect of the change in the number of working days. The reading implies that 4 working days can provide more benefits than 5 working days for companies, government, and workers. However, the professor strongly disagrees with the reading passage. Accordingly, he presents three refutations.

First of all, the reading passage mentions that this change makes companies earn more profit. However, the lecturer severely challenges the theory by arguing that decreasing working days lead to the loss in companies’ profit. It is because companies will spend a large amount of money on training new employees, medical insurance. Therefore, the argument proposed by the reading passage is invalid according to the refutations told by the lecturer.

Secondly, the reading passage argues that 4 working days lead to a decrease in the unemployment rate. Yet, the lecturer seriously rejects this argument because this measurement, in fact, makes more people lose their job for the reason that companies require their employees to work overtime. As a result, companies employ fewer people to complete their works.

Last but not least, the reading indicates that the enforcement of this measure can positively improve workers’ life quality. Once again, the lecturer opposes the evidence revealed in the reading passage, and he explains that this measure exactly makes damage to workers because the ability of working becomes worse while workers have more days to rest. Apparently, more evidence is wanting to conclude the result argued by the reading passage.

In conclusion, the professor argues strongly against each possible and positive outcome in the reading. That is to say, he does not completely agree that this change can improve greatly the overall welfare for the companies, government, and people.
