Franchise
The reading and the lecture are both about the use of a franchise for the inexperienced people who want starting in the business world. The author of the reading feels that a franchise improve the chance for the successful business. The lecturer disagrees with the claims made by the author. In her opinion buying a franchise it is not the best way to start a business. She feels that there are not advantages to do this.
Initially, the article mention that could be difficult for the first-time business owners to choose the right supplies and services. The article mention that buying a franchise remove much of this problem. This point is challenged by the lecture because, acquiring a franchise the owner is forced by a contract buy specific products and services usually overpriced. She claims that even if the owner find an equal product available it is not allowed to choose a cheaper version.
Secondly, the writer suggests that a franchise could save a lot of money in advertising products. In the article, it is said that, advertising is an underlying reason in a business’s success. The lecture, however, counters this by mentioning that the owner need to pay around 6% of the income to the parent company in return for advertising services. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that the parent company focus on the brand and not the owner’s individual business, offering a little benefits.
Finally, the author states that a franchise could provide more security. The article continues, stating that, the business breakdown is common with new business owners, especially in the beginning. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that in fact starting a business owners is more secure than buying a franchise. She notes that a good alternative could be bought an already independent business from a previously owner. This last option increase the probability of the business success twice than a franchise.
