hazard of glass on birds
The passage presents possible solutions for the hazardous impact of glass used in buildings on birds due to their inability to distinguish between glass and open air. The lecturer disregards all the ideas presented in the text and believes none of them are effective. His further demonstrations are as follows.
Firstly, one-way glass cannot be an efficient tool because it will act as a mirror in the eyes of the birds, and birds do not comprehend the concept of a mirror. The reflection of the sky or a tree in a mirror seems like the thing itself to them. Subsequently, the bird will fly right into the one-way glass as well as the regular glass.
Secondly, painting colorful lines on windows will not be the practical means to protect the birds either. The unpainted areas between the lines will be perceived as holes by the birds and they will try to fly through these holes. With the purpose of avoiding this threat, the holes would have to be made very small, which results in substantially dark interior space of the buildings.
Finally, an artificial magnetic field is not an effective equipment because birds employ their magnetic sense in long trips, for instance, travelling from a cold country to a warm country in winter. On the contrary, when they are on a short journey like a trip from one side of the city to the other, birds utilize their sense of sight and brightness. Hence, making the artificial magnetic field an unhelpful tool as well.
