Essay topics:

The reading passage and lecture by the professor presented here both discusses the painting attribution to James McNeill Whistler. The author of the passage believes that the painting of young woman in long white dress is surely of the Whistler’s. The professor in the lecture, however, found the claim implausible and presents some arguments to refute them all.

Firstly, the author of the reading passage suggests that shortly after the death of Whistler there was an exhibition conducted by his friend, where he attributed the painting to the Whistler. On the flip side, the lecturer challenges the proposition contending that although the exhibition consists of the Whistlers painting, there are many more paintings of other painters too. Hence, lecturer believes that it will be implausible to attribute Whistler without any ground.

Secondly, the author claims that woman portrayed in the painting was same as of his one painting “Symphony in the White”. Furthermore, the style of Whistlers is also matching to his other paintings. Also, it resembles the use of monochromatic palates used by the Whistlers in pervious paintings. In contrast, the lecturer refutes the claim by maintaining that the woman and monochromatic patterns were very popular among the painters those days and hence that painting may be painted by others.

Finally, the author argues that the signature mark of Whistlers painting: butterfly is also present on the painting. On the other hand, the lecturer claims that butterfly mark is placed after many years painting has been painted. Also, lecturer signifies that the mark must be on the upper left corner than on bottom right corner. Thus, it must be the case of forgery.

In the conclusion, author of the reading passage and the professor in the lecture have equally attempted to make their argument for and against the claim. Further analysis of the evidences will help to bring out the conclusion.
