The reading passage provides three reasons why consumers should choose hybrid vehicles while the lecture casts doubts about each point defending gas cars as a wiser choice.
First, the professor introduces that gas propelled vehicles equipped with eco-gas engines are in fact more efficient than hybrid cars on highways and also more reliable since they account on over hundred years old technology. Thus, the claim in the reading that hybrid vehicles are more economical stumbles.
Second, he argues that even though hybrid vehicles do not emit air pollutant particles, as the passage suggests, they require electricity which is generated by natural gas, for instance. And this process releases a significant amount of emissions that contribute to global warming. Indirectly, hybrid vehicles are not environmentally-friendlly.
Finally, the lecturer further points out two problems in regard to the battery of hybrid automobiles: it adds weigh to the vehicle, therefore increasing the consumption of energy, and the cost of battery replacement could reach up to 3500 dollars. Both issues could possibly outweigh the cost savings from fuel. In this way, the professor opposes to the reading that hybrid vehicles has an improved battery technology.
