The lecture and the reading passage are both regarding the issue that recent people read far less literature than in the past. The reading passage offers three effects of reading less literature. On the other hand, the lecturer rebuts all the perspectives presented in the passage.
To begin with, the author believes that literature provides us important intellectual stimulation, and without it, we might miss out on benefits. While the lecturer does not think it that way, she believes that instead of literature, many other high-quality books, such as, science and technological books, can also bring the readers dozens of knowledge.
Second, the author considers that we turn to other entertainment other than reading literature, and then it would lower our level of culture. For example, we might watch TV, videos or surf the Internet in our leisure time. However, the lecturer contends that there are plenty of means to gain knowledge. Due to the changes of culture, cultural values may come out in other forms, like music, music, and so on.
Third, the author thinks that many contemporary talented writers lack the audience, which leads to less investment in literature from publishers. On top of that, the lecturer says that it would not be the readers' faults. It is all because sometimes the writers create something difficult to understand for readers.
To sum up, the lecture and the reading passage are totally different in this issue from many perspectives.
