International trade is more important than ever before, but the actual vehicles used to transport goods have not advanced much since the 1950s. The majority of goods that travel between countries are still transported on container ships. However, many companies are developing autonomous container ships that do not require a human crew to control them. Crewless cargo ships have three important advantages over crewed vessels.
Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage.
Both the passage and the lecture discusses about the international trading and the ships used. While the passage says that crew less cargo ships can be a good option the lecture disagrees.
First, the passage claims that the crew less cargo ships would reduce the labor costs for shipping companies. However, the lecture insists that it is unlikely to have autonomous container ships and most of the ship already have only important and needed crew members like the one who inspect the ship or check if there is any broken equipment. So if they remove the crew the equipment will remain not repaired and it will be the companies loss.
Next, the passage asserts that crew less ships would be less attractive target for pirates as there will be no crew for the pirates to ransom. In contrast, the lecture argues that even if low tech pirates might not able to target the ships. But the high-tech pirates can track the ship through GPS and try to crash it or maybe they will hack into the system and try to control it and take the valuable goods from the ships.
Finally, the passage states that these ships would be less likely to have accidents with as there is no human to cause an error. On the other hand, the lecture points out that the accidents doesn't happen because of human error its because the ships take time to change their course or direction. And even if these ship are automated the ship, most of the ships are operated by humans. Hence there will not be only automated ship there might be human operated ship, so there are still chances of accidents.
