the Little Ice Age
The materials discusses several possible causes of the Little Ice Age. while the reading looks at the topic from one perspective, the listening challenges certain points outlined in the reading passage.
First, the author contends that the cooling climate happened because of ocean currents disruption. One the other hand, the professor refutes this and states that gulf steam fluctuation happened only in Europe and North America, but it did not happen in southren hemisphere, such as New Zeland and South Africa. The lecturer mentions that this theory could not explain the cooling climate at the southren areas, so it was not a possible cause of the Little Ice Age.
Second, the reading posits that the volcanic eruptions could cause the Little Ice Age. On the contrary, the listening contradicts this and assumes that, in order to a volcanic eruption causes a cooling climate, it should be very strong and has enough dust to cause a striking visual difficulty, a colorful sunset and a gray or brown snow. However, the professor adds that there is no report that these conditions happened during the Little Ice Age. The lecturer points out that the volcanic eruption was not strong enough to cause the cooling climate.
Third, the writer states that a decline in human populations could contribute to the cooling climate. Conversely, the lecturer challenges this and posits that human populations did not decline for a long time, the populations grew back quickly. The professor states that people cut down forests again to cultivate crops that needed to feed growing populations. As a result, decreasing the human populations did not cause the long term global cooling of the global climate.
