One of the best ways that parents can help their teenage children prepare for adult life is to encourage them to take a part-time job.
Some people claim that the best practice of preparing for the adult life is to doing a part time job and that's why the parents should motivate them at that direction. They cite tremendous competition and lack of job opportunities to support their viewpoints. However, I strongly disagree with their opinions and believe that there are many other fruitful options compared to the part-time job opportunity. I will demonstrate my position with three specific reasons throughout the writing.
First, participating in volunteer activities may help the teenagers to ace the difficulties and challenges in adult life hood. For example, blood donation, fund raising for poor etc. may help them to play the active role later in their job life. In fact, there are also many evidences that people who participated in volunteer activities, would become a successful leader too. Volunteer activities help the teenagers to take the right decision at the right time, which is very crucial and important skill to develop. Part-time job, on the other hand, seldom creates novel skills in the teenagers that assist them in future.
Second, parents might focus on learning some extracurricular activities for their teenage children. Extra-curricular activities play a vital role to develop professionalism and maturity which the text book knowledge or part-time job hardly can consolidate. For instances, singing, debating, acting, communication and presentation skill etc. are very much required in the present days and unfortunately part-time jobs rarely focus on these capabilities. Co-curricular activities help the teenagers to broaden the outlook and mind of the children and enrich their adaptation capability which is pivotal to face the hurdles in adult lifetime.
Third, it is also a responsibility of a parent to ensure higher studies of their children instead of focusing on part-time jobs. Nowadays, parents are more prone to make their children money makers rather than make them competent to struggle with the fittest, especially in the developing countries. For example, parents in Bangladesh are often reluctant to encourage their kids to complete their graduation or post-graduation. Instead, they are more willing to send them for some technical low salary part-time jobs which ultimately inhibit the mental growth of the teenagers. As a result, these teenagers often could not survive in hostile lifestyle at adulthood.
To summarize, there is a debate among the people whether the parents should motivate their teenage kids to participate in a part-time job to be familiar with the amenities and obstacles of the adult life. However, in my opinion, I would suggest that parents should try to nurture some other skills and abilities rather than encoring their teenage children to grab the opportunity of being a part-timer.
