People are reading less literature. Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading.
The reading and the lecture both discuss the claim that people are reading less literature than they used to. While the former states that this is not good for the population, the latter casts doubts on the assumptions made in the lecture as it will be described in the following paragraphs.
First of all, the author suggests that reading less literature implies the loss of benefits that reading brings, such as imagination, empathy, and our understanding of the language. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He says that a book does not have to be literature to be intellectually demanding. For example, there are many science books that offer stimulation, and that she considers good readings because they also help to develop our creativity.
Second, the writer contends that instead of literature books, people are reading superficial, poorly written, and intellectually undemanding books. Additionally, they prefer to watch television or music videos; activities that lower the level of culture of the population. The lecturer, on the other hand, poses that those activities mentioned in the reading improve our culture, which is constantly changing.
Third, it is stated in the article that good literature is being ignored, and that population is supporting less serious authors. This has increased the quantity of low standards books. The professor, however, affirms that readers are not to blame, but the authors, who have declined their writing abilities.
