The Phoenicians were an ancient civilization that emerged in the eastern Mediterranean around
1500 BCE. They were known for their seafaring skills and played a significant role in trade and
commerce. While some historians have suggested that the Phoenicians may have circumnavigated
(sailed all the way around) Africa, there are several compelling reasons why this is unlikely.
Firstly, the Phoenicians mostly used their ships to trade along coastal areas. While they were
skilled sailors, their ships were not designed for long-distance voyages in the open ocean. They
were small and made of wood, with limited room for cargo and navigational equipment. It is
doubtful that these ships could have withstood the powerful currents and storms that would have
been encountered on a voyage all the way around Africa.
Secondly, the geography of the African continent would have presented significant obstacles to
any sailors attempting to navigate it. The Cape of Good Hope, located at the southern tip of Africa,
is notorious for its strong currents and unpredictable weather. Even modern-day ships must be
very careful when passing through this region. Given the limited navigational equipment available
to the Phoenicians, it is unlikely that they would have attempted to cross these dangerous waters.
Finally, there is no real historical evidence to suggest that the Phoenicians ever completed this
journey. All surviving records from the era indicate that they were primarily interested in
establishing trade routes and colonies in the Mediterranean and Red Seas. There are no surviving
records or artifacts that clearly prove that the Phoenicians ever attempted to circumnavigate
Africa.
The article and the lecture both deal with the possibility that the Phoenicians, an ancient civilization, may have circumnavigated Africa. While the author of the reading offers three specific reasons for thinking that they have sailed all the way round Africa, the lecturer opposes the writers concerns. In her opinion, it is unlikely that they could have managed to do it.
First, the author of the text claims that the ships which these people used were not appropriate for far sailings as they were made of wood. Furthermore, it is mentioned in the article that the ships could not have withstood the currents and storms. In contrast, the professor argue that the ships were of a good quality and the Phoenicians were well-equiped. Additionally, she claims that the people were really skilled in repairing ships.
Second, the writer asserts that there were a lot of obstacles in the African continent like strong currents and unpredictable weather, which were hard to overcome. In addition to that, he points out that even modern ships should be really careful while passing through the region. However, the lecturer calls this argument into question by saying that the Phoenicians were skilled and could use stars and other options to navigate in the area. Moreover, she highlights that they would gain some knowledge about the area from the native residents of the continent.
Finally, the author of the reading states that there is no evidence that the Phoenicians circumnavigated Africa. He also mentions that all the records witness that they were just traveling in the Mediterranean and Red Seas. As opposed to the writer, the professor holds that actually there are indirect historical records that the Phoenicians sailed in this area. She mentions some evidence from Egyptian records and also points out that an ancient Greek wrote that these people sailed around the continent.
To summarize, the writer is convinced that it is doubtful that the Phoenicians have circumnavigated Africa, whereas the lecturer thinks the opposite.
