Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet
The lecture and the reading are mainly about a paining known as "Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet" and whether the work is done buy the famous artist Rembrandt. The passage provides three reasons to support that this painting is not painted by Rembrandt, whilst the professor argues against point pointed in the passage and tries to attribute the paining to Rembrandt.
Firstly, passage points out attention to the details is low in the painting. Specially inconsistency in the woman's dress. An this is not a feature of Rembrandt work. But the professor provides the reason why this has happened. She states that recent research and analysis has found that the original painting was modified after hundred years. The fur collar which caused the inconsistency was added in that time. Before that modification the collar was normal servant collar.
Secondly, passage states that in the painting light and shadow do not fit together. Passage points the inconsistency between face lighting and dark fur collar, which does not reflect light. Professor again point out that this is due to the modification mentioned above and before that the collar was lite color which reflects light much better. Which depicts Rembrandt's the mastery of handling light and shadow.
Final fact provided in the passage is about the panel. The current one is made of several pieces of wood glued together and this is not a attribute of any known Rembrandt painting. Professor states that is panel modification was also occurred during the above modification and original painting was on a wood panel. This modification was done to enlarge the panel to increase the value of the painting. She then point out that that wood of the panel was taken from the same tree as the panel of another Rembrandt painting.
In conclusion, passage provides three statements to prove why this painting is not done by Rembradt. But in the lecture professor refute all of them using a recent research finding.
