possibility of sending humans to Mars
The reading and the lecture both discuss the difficulties associated with the mission of sending humans to Mars. Although in the passage, the author argues the impossibility of such missions for a few reasons, the professor in the lecture proposes solutions to those. She is of the opinion that sending humans to Mars is feasible in the near future.
The first point that the professor makes is that the astronomers can exploit a method of cultivating plants, which do not need soil for their growth. These vegetations, called hydroponic, can produce food for the passengers of the spaceship while purifying the waste waster and emitting oxygen. With that technique in hand, contrary to the point that has been mentioned in the text, the astronauts can conduct interplanetary travels.
Furthermore, the professor refutes the author's opinion about zero-gravity obstacles that the astronauts may encounter after their return to Earth. She points out that the astronauts had been into the spaces for months. By doing regular exercises and taking vitamin and mineral pills, they could maintain their muscle mass and bone density. As a result, there won't be a physical limitation for astronauts traveling to Mars and coming back to Earth.
Finally, the professor argues that solar radiation is not constant. The engineers can make a small part of the spaceship resistant to such potent electromagnetic waves. Making a small part of spacecraft shielded against the radiation, not only spacecraft won't be massive, but also in the time of sun activation periods, the crow can move to that section to protect themselves from the dangerous radiations.
