pros and cons of the "let it burn" policy in the case of Yellowstone park
The reading and the lecture are both about a policy under the name of "let it burn" which states it is better to the forest fire burns itself out. However, the author of the reading claims that the forest fire caused catastrophic damage to the Yellowstone, the lecturer believes the fire is a natural phenomenon and this policy is not destruction but creative.
First, both the article and the lecture argue the fire and its effect on the vegetation and plant habitat. The passage points to destroying vegetation and small plants as the results of the fire. Also, it asserts the forest fire made the Yellowstone to a wilderness land. In contrast, the lecturer explains after the fire new plants were colonized in that region which made the diversity of vegetation even more. On the basis of the lecture, although the forest fire destroyed trees and scorched acres, small plants were grown after the fire which could grow on open and shaded space. In addition, seeds which needed an abundant heat to germinate obtained an opportunity to grow.
Second, the article as well as the talk discusses the effects of adopting the above-mentioned policy on animals. Accordingly, the passage asserts a group of animals escaped from the fire, and another group could not escape and annihilated. The author of the passage also points to destructing animals habitat and food chains as the impacts of this policy. On the contrary, the lecturer states animals can recover themselves in such situations and this devastating impact can encourage new habitats for living small species such as rabbits and hares. The existence of new species leads to thrive predators and boost food chains.
Finally, the essay believes that the forest fire reduced the visitors of the Yellowstone park as a tourist attraction, and businesses that leveraged on the park visitors got in trouble. According to the lecture, this idea was true if the fire happened every year. However, it was a once-in-time event and it was also the result of a combination of several factors such as low rainfall, accumulation of dry undergrowth, and unusual wind. Therefore, it cannot be mentioned that these results occur frequently and it was also clear that lots of tourists have visited Yellowstone park years afterward.
