The purposes of the vessels found in Iraq.
The passage and the lecturer are in sharp disagreement. The passage believes that the vessels found in Iraq were not used for the electricity purposes. It brings about three reasons to support its stance. However, the professor asserts that the battery and electricity theory is correct and the reasons provided by the passage are not convincing. The passage's argumentations are as follows.
First of all, the passage says that if the vessels were used as batteries, there should be some electricity conductors like metal wires. Since such a thing is not found with the vessels, we cannot say that they were used as batteries. But the lecturer thinks that the vessels were found by the local people and since those people did not know what they have found, they may throw them away or were uninterested in the conductors. This means that the passage's reason is quite unconvincing.
Secondly, the passage puts forward that the copper cylinders found with the vessels resemble the copper cylinders found in the Seleucia city. Obviously, the copper cylinders of Seleucia were used to hold sacred texts. They had nothing to do with electricity. Since the copper cylinders of vessels have same shape with those of Seleucia city, it can be said that they were used for the same purposes. However, the lecturer believes that this claim does not prove anything. She says that they may wanted to use it for one specific purpose, but they eventually used it for another purpose. According to her, ancient people used them for electricity after their inventors found the electricity power of these materials.
Finally, the passage says that ancient people had not any devices dependent on electricity, so why they should generate electricity, meaning that the battery theory is impossible. In contrast, the professor assumes that the electricity had another purpose. These vessels were used to generate mild shocks which was important for doctors. Additionally, ancient people used the electricity power to convince their peers that they have magical powers.
