Salton sea salinity

Essay topics:

Salton sea salinity

Both reading passage and the lecture are about Salton Sea salinity. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out that there are some flaws in the writer's claims. In Fact the reading passage states that we can decrease Salton Sea salinity by three methods. While the professor believes that the solutions are not appropriate and addresses in detail, the trouble in each point made in the reading text.

First and foremost, the reading article states that salinity can be reduced in special desalination facilities. The professor believes that there are weaknesses in the author's position and opposes the point by indicating that the solid material that is left behind as a result of water evaporation possesses health risk to the population. For instance, Selenium is toxic chemical reasons for many ailments in the human race.

Secondly, the text outlines that as Pacific Ocean is 20% less saline. It can be use to dilute the salt level in the lake by constructing canals and pipelines. Nevertheless, the lecturer argues that as the Pacific Ocean is too far from the lake, it will be very expensive to build canals and pipelines. Along with this, government have not enough resources to fund it.

Next, the author claims that we can also control salinity by constructing walls to divide the lake into several sections. On the other hand, the lecturer totally rejected the idea as she said geological disasters such as earthquakes may result in demolishment of walls. Which in turn results in the mixing of the water and also waste of capital.

It is quite visible that the author and lecturer had conflicting views about controlling salinity of the Salton Sea. They are having trouble finding common ground on this issue.
