sea cows extinction
The reading and the lecture are about Steller's sea cow extinction. The author of the reading feels that they got extinct due to native people's habitats, for their source of food and for European fur trading. However, the lecturer contradicts all the points made by the author in the subsequent paragraphs.
First of all, the sea cows were overhunted by native people of Siberia in order to meet their food requirements in difficult climatic conditions. On the other hand, the professor states that the sea cows were massive of about nine meters long and weigh over ten tons. Additionally, he mentions the population of native people wasn't that large to make sea cows extinct. He also says that they don't need to hunt a lot of sea cows to accomplish their needs. This reason of lecturer clearly shows that sea cows weren't becoming extinct because of hunting.
Secondly, the passage illustrates that the sea cows became extinct due to ecosystems disturbances. These disturbances caused kelp to decline which is the target food for the sea cows. Nevertheless, the tutor says that if something happened really it would not only affect the kelp plant but also the other animals. For instance, the whales are also present along with sea cows, but they didn't show any decline in their population. This clearly explains that the sea cows extinction is not due to the ecosystem disturbances.
Finally, the reading posits that the sea cows were used for European trading for their fur.
On the contrary, the academician provides that by the time of the European traders arrived, the sea cows population was already small. On top of it, he adds the point that there was an ongoing decrease in sea cows population before the arrival of European traders. The European traders were the last people to arrive on Island. By this, we can make out, that European traders have nothing to do with the extinction of the sea cows.
