sea otters
While that passage states that pollution is the cause for decrease in sea otters in the
Alaskan coast, the speaker argues that the decline in sea otter population is due to
predation.
First, there are no dead bodies of sea otters that are washed to the shore of the Alaskan
coast. If pollution is the cause, then one should be able to find the dead bodies of the
sea otters. When killed by a predator, the sea otters would be eaten immediately and hence
the dead bodies of the sea otters cannot be found.
Second, the whales on which the orca usually feed on have disappeared from the ocean
due to human hunting. So, for the orca to survive, they have to start attacking the
smaller mammals. As stated in the passage, there is a decrease in the population of
smaller mammals like seals, sea lions and sea otters as they are being killed by the
orca. This contradicts the passage that states there is a decrease in the sea mammals
population due to pollution.
Third, the uneven pattern in the otter decline can aslo be explained by the orca predation
theory. Not all regions in the water are accessible by the orca. Hence, there is a decrease
in the otter population where the orcas can venture into while the otter population in
shallow and rocky water regions is stabe. This theory contradicts the passage which argues
that the uneven patter of otter decline is due to ocean currents and other environmental
factors that create an uneven concentration of pollutants.
