some possible problems associated with using a turtle excluder device (TED)

The author points out some possible problems associated with using a turtle excluder device (TED) to indicate that some other solution should be considered. The lecturer, however, refutes the aforementioned arguments and offers some counterclaims to support the merits of TED.

First, according to the reading, turtles rarely placed in traps, one per month. In addition, TED is not economical in terms of its price since shrimpers have to pay so much in comparison to the small chance of protecting a turtle. Nevertheless, the professor concedes the statement that the event occurs hardly ever, but if it is considered that throughout different parts of the USA these shrimpers are working almost everyday, it can be concluded that they pose a serious hazard to thousands of turtles.

Second, there are some other possibilities which can be substitute with using TED such as reducing the time when shrimpers are allowed keeping their net underwater. On the contrary, the speaker rejects the claim due to the fact that it seems just a theoretical method. He rule out the possibility of monitoring time by the individuals, but TED provides them a more reliable and easy approach to reinforce the shrimpers to let turtle escape.

Third, the existing TED is not designed properly and efficiently since the openings are not big enough. Conversely, the professor alludes to other points that these TEDs are specially designed in order to be utilized in some specific areas, and they possess their application in a given region. Hence, it is feasible to produce other TEDs with distinct features based on different conditions.
