stumback whales are orient by stars
The reading and the lecture both have talk about humpback whales. Who are migrate long distance for feeding and mating purpose. The author of reading believes that whales find their way by the stars. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in article. The lecturer said that these claims are not related between their intellectual and navigating abilities.
First of all, the author claims that humpback whales have high intelligence than other animals or birds. They use night sky for their orientation. This point is challenged by lecturer she says that there is no relation between their intelligence and sky orientation. There are many other birds like ducks who use night sky for orientation even though they have not high brain activity. Thus, there is no connection between their ability to orient sky and their talent.
Secondly, the author states that humpbacks whales migrate in straight lines. The can orient themselves by external objects or forces. Therefore, they rely on stars at night to provide them external signs to maintain directions over long distances. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggest that the animals who has bio magnetic in their body, so they are able to feel bio magnetic forces of earth. The whales are orient themselves by bio magnaeic forces of earth rather than external objects.
.
Thirdly, the author mentions that the whales have unusual behavior during migration. Additionally, they observed the floating straight for few minutes to looking upwards. This behavior is known as spy hopping. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that they looking upward for look for hunt. The spy hopping behavior is not due to looking towards stars, but for find their pray.
