turtle excluding device

Essay topics:

turtle excluding device

The reading and the lecture are both about the usage of turtle excluder device (TED) which is useful to save the population of turtles from the shrimp fishing boats. The author of reading thinks that TED has been criticized for several ways. The lecturer casts doubt on the points made in the reading and says that TED is very good way to protect the turtles.

First of all, the author points out that cost of using TED is relatively better than chances of turtles to trapped by shrimpers. The lecturer challenged this point by mentioning that there are thousands of shrimp- boats are operating in USA. If yearly thousand of turtles trap by each shrimp-boat, then it will be dangerous for their populations as compared to their population. Therefore, TED is effective way to save them.

Secondly, the author states that another method can be use to save them, like the shortening of the time limit that shrimp boats allowed to keep their net underwater. The lecturer refutes this point and states that it is possible only in theory. The government cannot check the time limit of net. Thus, TED monitoring is best method to check the presence of turtles in the net.

Finally, the author mentions that TED is not effective for larger species of sea turtles, so they cannot escape from the net. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that for the larger species of turtles, TED modification is possible. Additionally, by the usage of modified TED, shrimpers can easily save the turtles, because they can escape from the net.
