The reading and the lecture are both about turtle excluding device ted. The author feels that TEDs have been criticized for several reasons. The lecturer challenges the claims made by author. he is of opinion that many expert believe that TEDs are good way to save endangered turtle and they are vital parts of equipment of shrimp boat.
First, the author argues that turtles get trapped only rarely. The article mentions that it is estimated one turtle each month get trapped, however, using TEDs cost the shrimpers to lose some percentage of shrimps to escape through turtle passages so the lost of shrimps is high in comparison to lose turtle. this specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. he claims that it is true that rarely turtle get trapped by TEDs. Additionally he says that there is a lot of shrimps and shrimpers in united stated and if any shrimper got turtle there will be a big loss in decline in turtle population and this is a big problem and we need to think about turtle population not the individual shrimper.
Secondly, the writer suggests that there are other methods to protect turtles than using TEDs. In the article, it is said that by shortening time limit of shrimp boats that keep the nets underwater and pull the net when time limit reach to allow the caught turtle to get air and allow the shrimper to release the turtle from the nets. The lecturer, however, rebut this by mentioning that time limit is good idea, but only in theory. he elaborate this by bringing up the point that time can not be manage and inforce and the government can not manage how long the shrimpers use the boats and TEDs is good to control time all need to do is just make sure before boat leave from port that TEDs is found.
Finally, the author posits that TEDs are not effective for larger species of endangered sea turtles. Moreover, the article stated that some species like loggerhead and leatherback turtles can grow to be quite large and cannot fit through the escape passage that standard TEDs provide. In contrast, the lecturer position is that it is true some TEDs are small for large turtle. he notes that the size of TEDs can be modify and make a big one that can be used for a big turtles so custom size of TEDs are used for each area depending on size of turtle in that area.
