Summarise the points in the lecture and explain how they cast doubt on the point made in the reading
The reading passage and the lecture discuss the greatness of the film, Gone with the Wind, and the allegations of it to be a racist film. The author states that the reputation of the picture could decline due to the plot, which shows the humiliation of black people, as well as showing them in a stereotypical way. The lecturer disagrees with each point made in the reading and suggests that racism wasn’t romanticized and black people were written as amazing and strong characters.
First of all, the reading argues that the plot is mainly focused on showing the privileged society, who wants to keep in control African Americans. However, the speaker contends that although the story has a white perspective the presentation is quite overstated. Filmmakers admit the injustice and also, in addition to racism, raise the topic of feminism, which makes Gone with the Wind full of substantial social problems.
Secondly, it is claimed that black women, main character’s maids, have stereotypical and silly images. It is also stated that one of them does not even have a name. The lecturer undermines this point by mentioning that Mammy is portrayed as a very protective and complex woman, while the actress, who played her, won the Academy Award. Maid Prissy is also an unusual person, whose rebellious behavior can be explained by the discontent to be a slave.
Finally, the article states that modern Hollywood broke free from the racist frames that were in the days of the early development of the American cinematography. In the lecture, the professor points that it is Gone with the Wind that provided a chance for many black actresses to get a job at this field and make the future generations overthink the significance of equality.
