In the reading passage, the author discusses that artificial reefs have several benefits that could provide food and shelter for many types of fish, while the lecture claims that what the passage state is not convincing and disputes those ideas presented in the passage with several proofs.
Firstly, according to the reading passage, it is suggested that artificial reefs have increased the populations of some species of fish by giving fish more places to gather and reproduce. In contrast, the professor argues in the lecture that fish are gathered around artificial reefs may because fish have gone to these areas before. As a result, it is seems like that the population of fish is increasing around reefs. Also if fish are collected in a single place, fishers could catch a lot of them so that the population of fish could decrease.
In addition, the statement in the reading material indicates that artificial reefs can also improve the economic competitiveness of small-scale fishers. On the contrary, the professor points out that secret reefs could bring some safety probems. For example, other fishers do not know those secret reefs, they will use their nets to capture fish so that nets could be caught and destroyed by reefs. Besides, some boats that flow on the shallow ocean could be crashed because of artificial reefs. It is best to let other fishers know the exact location of reefs. But in this way the small scale fishers could lost their competitiveness.
Finally, the author of the reading claims that artificial reefs provide an inexpensive, environmentally friendly way to reuse materials.
However, the speaker thinks it is not true. For instance, osborne reef is bounded by many materials. Once the storm come, those materials could loose and crash into the ocean. As a result, the reef brings much environmental damage for the plants and animals that live in the sea.
