Essay topics:

Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage.

The reading and lecture are both about how the famous novelist Jane Austen would look like? The author of the reading states that the non professional sketch of her which later on painted by other professional artist is the only accepted painting of her. The lecturer disagrees. He mention the painting does not resemble her by any chance and attacks each of the claim made in the article.
Firstly, the author of the reading begins by stating that after Austen demise her family had given her portrait as an illustration in an edition of her letter. Therefore, they recognized the painting was of Austen and claim it. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that the painting was authorized in the year 1882 and she died almost 70 years ago so the family who claimed the painting to be of Austen did not have seen her in real life.
Secondly, according to the writing the girl is identical to Austen which means the attributes of girl in the painting is exactly match with Austen. Thus, this clearly shows the girl resembles Austen for sure. The speaker on other hand points out that although they are similar to some extent this might be because Austen had large family so the painting is suceptible to resemble one of her niece not Austen herself.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that even though the painting date is obscure the style of artist that links with painting shows a kind of painting that could be afforded by merely affluent family like Austen. Furthermore, he was active in painting during the period when Austen was a teenage girl. The professor rebuts this argument. Her puts forth the idea that the stamp on the back of black canvas clearly depict the syle of another artist. Moreover, he used to sketch in th period when Austen was in her late 20’s. Thus, this proves the painting of a teenage girl is not of Austen.
As we can see, the author and lecturer shows conflicting views on the Austen appearance evidence. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
