The reading and lecturer are both about the amateur portrait by Jane Austen’s sister Cassandra and later on it was painted professionally. The author of the reading states no body knows what Jane Austen looked like however there are some evidences that depicts the girl in the painting is Jane Austen although it was not entitled by her name. The lecturer disagrees. He mentions that the proposed reason by author are not convincing and attacks each of the claim made in the article.
First, the author begins by stating that after her demise, her family had given authority to use her portrait as an illustration in her letter. Now, her decendent family are claiming the author of letter to be Austen. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that when the portrait was authorized Austen was dead for almost 70 years ago so the family who are claiming the painting might not have known and seen her in real life.
Secondly, the girl resembles all the feature of teenage Austen even though the portrait is of adult Austen. In addition, the detail of face, nose, eyebrow and so on in the painting exactly matches with teen Austen. The speaker on other hand points out that since Austen had joint family and there were many cousins who were of teen age the girl in painting might resemble any one of them. Furthermore, there are few instances that the portrait is of Austen’s niece.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that although the painting was not signed and dated the style is linked to the society painter that the affluent family like Austen would hire. Moreover, the artist was active during the period when Austen was a teenage girl. The professor rebuts this argumnet. He puts forth the idea that the stamp on back of canvas clearly shows the portrait was sketched by another artist. Additionally, he began to sell painting when Austen was 27 years old not in her teen age. Therefore, this clarifies the the girl in the picture is not Austen.
As we can see, the author and speaker holds conflicting views on the portrait whether it is of Austen or not. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
