Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage

Both the passage and lecture discuss the contributions African-Americans made as a result of slavery to American culture. The passage begins by discussing African slaves attempted to maintain the cultural identify and traditions, often in defiance and in resistance to slavery. While many of their practices and traditions were restricted, many of their values and beliefs survived and have either been modified or mixed with the cultures of their owners. This is supported by the professor in that African slaves had a profound influence on American culture.

He claims that American language was influenced by African culture because it is filled with Africanisms and these include words such as bogus, funky, jamboree and others. Food was another big influence and so was music. This is corroborated by the author who makes the same claim. For instance, slaves who spoke different languages were mixed together and this resulted in the creation of new dialects such as Creole, which is spoken by both blacks and whites in Louisiana. Food is another influence in which "soul food", based on the food preparation of black slaves, has influenced and is synonymous with Southern cuisine.

Finally, in terms of religion, the author notes that slaves were stripped of their religion and forced to become Christians. However, they retained many aspects of their culture and incorporated them into their worship. According to professor, the slaves made use of religious and cultural traditions as a way of coping with slavery and drew on African customs, particularly in burying their dead.
