Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
Both the reading passage and lecture discuss about the decline in the interest
in literature in young people. But the lecturers creates doubt on what has been mentioned in the passage.
First, according to the passage, the decline in book reading, especially the literature is very rapid. This might lead to decrease in the quality of young adults in their imagination, and other closely related good skills. In contrast to this the lecturer says that only literature does not provide all these qualities, one can easily get these things from reading science and history books, which young people quite do so.
Second, the passage discusses that the people are reading something else like some self help kind of books, which do not seem to be of good quality. And at the same time people are changing their behaviour pattern and are spending their more time in watching television or listening to music. Where as the lecturer says that, it's good that people are shifting to radio and television, because these mediums seem to be more effective in conveying the message to the young adults. Some of these sources speak strongly than the literature itself.
Third, the passage says that, this is going to be very unfortunate, when the the quality of the literature written seems to be of high quality. If the readers do not prefer to read may decline the demand and as a result the quality will also decline. Where as lecturer says that it is becoming fashionable writings by the new authors, who use very difficult language, and not that simple to easily understandable by the majority. That could be the reason for decline in interest in literature among the young people.
So in conclusion we can see how the lecturer casts doubt on what has been discussed in the reading passage.
