The reading states that portrait belonging to Austen family is of Jane Austen and provides three reasons for support. The lecture, however, claims that it is doubtful to believe that the sketch is of her and refutes each of the professor reasons.
First, the professor claims that the Austen family, in 1882 and now, still claim the portrait is of Jane Austen. The listening says that that sketch was authorized after 70 years of her death, so the family members have hardly recognized her or even have not gotten a chance to see her.
Second, the reading posits that her portrait resembles Cassandra's sketch, which depicts Austen. The lecture negates this point by saying it can be of her relatives. According to listening, Austen family, during that time, was so large and she had many cousins similar to her appearance and age. Further, many critics claim that it may be an image of Maryan Canthian.
Third, the professor states that the painting was painted when she was young by artist Ozias. The listening, in contrast, by saying even though the painting was similar to a style of Ozias, but the painting board (black canvass) is made by William Leg. We also learned that when the William Leg was selling the black canvass, in England, she was 27 years old, but the portrait is of her teenage.
