Although both the reading and listening passage deal with the same topic: cutting down the workweek from 5 days a week to 4 days a week in the United States, their perspective are different. While the author of the reading believes that reducing the time of work has advantage to both workers and employers, the lecturer casts doubt on the writer’s idea. He thinks that working 4 days a week have some concerns.
The first point that the author makes in the passage is that working 4 days a week benefit the company’s profit. The article notes that thanks to the variety of the employee, and their alertness, the company has the work done in short time with little errors which may increase the profit of corporation. However, the lecturer refutes this idea and asserts that the change in work week leads some extraneous money. He elaborates on this by mentioning the cost spending for training and medical health for new employees. Moreover, the money investing for more space and computers is considerable concern to a company.
Another point that the author makes is that reducing the workweek from 5 days a week to 4 days a week benefit the employees a lot. It is mentioned that the shortened work week let the employee have more time for rest. Therefore, they will become alert and make less errors in their work. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes this argument and claims that the amount of work will be a burden to the employee if there is a change in the work week. He argues that employees must have to do the same amount of work for just 4 days, which makes the job less pleasant for them.
The last point that the author makes is that changing the work week from 5 days a week to 4 days a week improves the employees’ lifes. The article mentioned that worker will have more time to spend for their family, and themselves if reducing the working time. On the contrary, the lecturer claims that there will be risk in employees’ lifes if cutting down on the work week. He puts forth the idea that both job ability and job career of worker will decrease as working 4 days per week. For example, the management position requiring a careful control on operating process needs the worker to spend more time in their work and affords high wage as well.
