The reading passage gives three primary theories about the massive Chaco structures in New Mexico. It states these structures might be used as apartment buildings, storage centers and a place for ceremonies. However, the professor is not convinced with these theories by projecting some serious doubts about the theories.
The first theory as per reading passage states that the buildings were purely used for residential purposes. The author also claims that these buildings represent earlier versions of the present apartment buildings at New Mexico which can accommodate many people. But the professor casts some serious doubts on this theory. He says these buildings look massive from outside but when it is observed from inside, it is not convincing that many people could accommodate because there are not enough fireplaces and rooms for hundreds of people.
The second theory claims that these buildings were used for storing materials like maize. The size of the buildings is well suited to store maize year long. However, the professor refutes this claim. He points out that grains of maize were not uncovered during archaeological excavations. He questions that why there is no spilled maize. He further says that no maize containers were found and how can maize be stored without containers.
The third theory claims that these houses were used for ceremonies because the archaeologists identified an old pile mound which consists of many broken pots. These broken pots might be used for cooking and serving purposes in ceremonies and hence these buildings were centers of ceremonies. However, the professor opposes this claim. He says that along with broken pots, archaeologists revealed many construction materials like sand, stone and other building materials. This pile might be a trash heap of construction materials. Furthermore, he says that workers might used pots for meals and hence broken pots do not support ceremonial centers claim.
Thus, the professor casts some serious doubts on the three theories about the Chaco structures by saying there is not enough space and fireplace, no evidence of spilled maize and containers and the presence of a lot of construction material in the trash heap.
