The reading states that there is controversy in the accuracy of Chevalier written memoir and provide three reasons of support. However, the lecturer explains that everything written in there is a reliable source of history and refutes each of the author’s reasons.
First of all, the passage claims that it is doubtful that Chevalier is rich since he borrowed money while living in Switzerland. On the other hand, the lecturer says that he is indeed a wealthy person and there is reason why he need to loan for penny. In order to have the large sum of money, he must first sell his properties and the payment may take couple of days or so to complete, thus to fund his gambling he borrowed money while waiting.
Second, the article posits that the preciseness of Chevalier’s conversation with Soltaire is questionable saying that it is impossible to remember every phrase. In contrast, the lecturer states that Chevalier has his own journal where he wrote down everything said for each discussion he had with Soltaire. He kept and used the diary as a reference, moreover he even seek for writer’s opinion regarding the composition of his memoir.
Third, the reading discussed that Chevalier escape from Venice’s prison is merely due to bribery and not because he escaped using a piece of metal. The lecturer opposes this by saying that bribe is impossible inside the since there are numerous of prisons who are more powerful and have strong connections yet was not able to escape from there. Furthermore, the ceiling of his cell has damage after he got to run from the prison. Repair would not be needed if he did not escape the way he told it.
In conclusion, the reason why in need to loan, the kept journal of all the conversation with Soltaire and the wrecked ceiling inside his cell are the main reasons why the lecturer claims that Chevalier’s autobiography contains accurate information about his life.
