TPO-09 - Integrated Writing Task Car manufacturers and governments have been eagerly seeking a replacement for the automobile's main source of power, the internal-combustion engine. By far the most promising alternative source of energy for cars is the hy
The reading and the lecture are both about the alternative to power source in cars which is hydrogen based fuel cell engine. The author of the reading believes that it more useful to switch from the traditional internal combustion engine. However, the lecturer cast doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that internal combustion engine uses petroleum to run the the car. It is mentioned that it is non renewable in nature and it will deplete in time. It is also states that Hydrogen comes from wide variety of sources like natural gas and water so, it can be easily available and renewable which makes it appealing to the people. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that Hydrogen is merely not the solution to the problem they are encountering. Furthermore, He argues that it is not readily available to use and sites some example like water must be in pure liquid form but in order to obtain it, it requires technology and equipment to produce and store it. He further explain that it must be kept freezing cold for the gas to be properly used.
Secondly, the author contends that the Hydrogen based fuels are popular due to it promises it can solve the pollution problems in the world. The article notes that the only by product of fuel cell engine is water, However, the author reiterates that in internal combustion engine its by product is carbon dioxide which results in global warming. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that Hydrogen cannot solve the problem in pollution thus it can only worsen the pollution in our atmosphere. He elaborates on this by mentioning that they process the pure hydrogen in factories, which burns the oil and coal thus, producing thick smoke in the air which pollutes the environment.
Finally, the author states that it is economical to use fuel cell engine, it is cheap and readily available. The article establishes that it only uses half fuel energy but its mileage is the same with the internal combustion powered cars. However, the lecturer, on the other hand, posits that it is not cost efficient because the manufacturing of materials are expensive. He puts forth the idea that platinum is one of the component needed to produce hydrogen fuel cells thus, It is a rare material to gather and in order for the engine to work platinum must go through chemical reaction to power cars. If chemical reaction does not occur, then it is unsuccessful and the car could not function properly.
