The reading and lecture is both about the salvage logging in which both of them argue that whether salvage logging is good or not. The reading describes the salvage logging is beneficial to some extent. But the lecture cast doubt about this statement. She says that more than the benefit salvage logging cause environmental damage.
Firstly the reading believes that after fire the forest is full of dead trees everywhere. So salvage logging cause the new space for the new growing trees. But the lecture takes this point as challenge. She says that cleaning forest by salvage logging is an artificial process in which there is no benefit to the forest. So there is a ultimate interference in the natural process. She also extends that after the fire the natural process of degradation cause the soil fertile which is much needed for new trees to grow rather than salvage cleaning which lacks the nutrient of the soil.
Secondly the author of the reading claims that after fire burn trees is a nest for a huge amount of insects which in further cause harm to new trees. Author also says that it goes against the suitable growth of new trees. But the lecture tells oppositely. She says that there is a some insects which does not cause any harm to the forest. She mention that spruce, bettle and some other bugs are beneficial for the forest trees. In addition she says that if there is enough insects there would a number of birds to feed up these insects which are essential. So this process cause less or no harm than the salvage logging.
Finally, the author of the reading mention about the economic benefit about salvage logging. Author says inorder to salvage logging there need a lot of people which means that there enough job which in further reduces the unemployment of the local people. But the lecture rebut the argument. She says that to clear forest and to do salvage logging there is use of helicopter and other vehicle which in further increase the cost of logging. She also mention that salvage logging sometime is done by outside of the local people. So there is no chance of get employed and no hope of reduction of unemployment problem of local people.
