TPO-21 - Integrated Writing Task Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, g

The passage and lecture both discuss three statements around a process, which is dubbed genetic modification, and its effects on trees. The reading puts out that this modification yields dozens of the benefits. In contrast, the lecture explains that told modification can cause some serious problems and demonstrates some counterarguments.

Firstly, the text claims that genetically modified trees are more resistant in a harsh condition, and hence it is more likely to survive. The lecturer denies this and says that maybe they are resistant to one type of condition, but it does not necessarily grantee their survival. In fact, non modified trees are more genetically diverse, and therefore in a poor climate or insects’ infestation, there would be at least some trees which are able to survive and insure the existence of that species of tree. But, genetically changed trees have uniform gens, and so a new climate or pest possibly can wipe out all of them.

Secondly, the article indicates that modified trees are more beneficial for people who grow them in the term of cost. However, the speaker mentions that there are other hidden costs related to modified trees. After each tree growing, farmers cannot gather seeds for a new free planting. According to the professor, by law, farmers have to pay company every time they plant.

Thirdly, the reading reminds that modified tress can be an excellent solution to address overexploitation of wild tress since they grow rapidly. The lecture opposes this by explaining that modified trees can cause more damage on local trees because they grow more aggressively. As a result, they can overcome to other trees in a competition for resources such as sunlight, soil, and water.
