As it was stated in the reading passage, it is the author's belief that the population of yellow cedar, which is a common tree in northwest America, has been declining. He provided three reasons to substantiate his claim. On the contrary, the lecturer finds the justification of the author unconvincing and utterly repudiates the reasons as follows:
Initially, the writer brought up the idea that insect parasites can be the cause of this population decline. However, the lecturer is thoroughly doubtful about the reliability of this idea. As he points out that healthy cedars are resistant to insect attacks for they have some chemicals in them that kill insects. And if there are some dead trees with cedar bark beetles on them, it's because those trees had been already damaged or dead by the time the beetles attacked them.
Another emphasized point in the reading was that brown bears, that claw the trees in search of food, may be the reason of this steady decline in population. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this one too by asserting that there is a population decline happening in all north western parts of America, including the islands. Bears don't live on these islands. So population decline is happening with or without the bears and for this reason bears can not be the cause of the decline.
As the last point, the author drew attention to the fact that that gradual changes of climate can damage the roots in freezing climate and this can be the reason of the decline. Yet again, the lecturer considers this hypothesis invalid as well by explaining that more trees are dying in lower elevations, which are warmer, than higher ones. So although cold and freezing climate makes the trees sensitive, it can't be a candidate for the cause of tree's declining population.
