TPO-23 - Integrated Writing Task Populations of the yellow cedar, a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America, have been steadily declining for more than a century now, since about 1880. Scientists have advanced several hypotheses expla
Both the article and lecture discuss decline of yellow cedar trees' population in northwestern North America. The writer believes that there are three reasons for this phenomenal, however, the lecturer casts doubt on the reasons provided at the passage.
Firstly, lecturer states that young yellow cedar trees are more resistant to cedar bark beetle, because the yellow cedar trees secrete a poisonous chemical substance that could kill insect parasites. It is mentioned in the lecture that if cedar bark beetle eat yellow cedar trees, they will die by poisonous substance that the yellow cedar tree produce. Therefore, it is unlikely that the insects are a cause of cedar tree' decline. On the contrary, it is argued in the passage that insect parasites such as cedar bark beetle is one of causes of the tree' decrease.
Secondly, the professor claims that brown bears can partially decline the population of cedar trees by their eating habits, but these bears are not responsible for overall decline of the tree. The lecturers argues that brown bears only exist across all of coastal line, but these bears do not live in Islands and if the bears are responsible for the tree's decline, it should not exist any decline of yellow cedar tree in Island, as the brown bears do not live there. So, the decline of the yellow cedar tree is not related to brown bears' feeding habits. By contrast, author believes that because bears sometimes claw at the cedar trees, they lead to weaken the tree and thus bears are accountable for decreasing numbers of yellow cedar trees.
Finally, although the writer of passage claims that climate changes at northwest North America, which freezing weather cause to damage to root systems of the tree, the speaker challenges this claim by saying that many trees died at the lower elevation areas which have a warmer climate. He continues by stating that the frozen weather do not harm the roots of the trees, since there are no more trees affected by cold climate in the high elevations and only more damages were observed in warmer locations. Therefore, the climate of the region do not makes root systems of the yellow cedar trees sensitive to weather.
